This is first time we got written guarantees

The Kosovo Serbs have been given a written guarantee for their demands from the Belgrade authorities for the first time in the latest Serbian government conclusions, councilors at a joint session of the four municipalities in northern Kosovo that is being held in Leposavic said Friday.

Kosovska Mitrovica Municipal President Krstimir Pantic said that at the last meeting in Brussels between the prime ministers from Belgrade and Pristina, Serbian Prime Minister Ivica Dacic presented the Kosovo Serbs' demand for the regime at the administrative crossings Jarinje and Brnjak to remain unchanged and it had been accepted.

"All our demands were accepted by both the EU and the Kosovo prime minister," said Pantic, adding that he saw no reason why the northern Kosovo municipal assemblies should not support the yesterday adopted conclusions of the Serbian government as the best possible solution for the status of Kosovo and the north of the province can be achieved only through joint efforts with the government in Belgrade.

He said that the talks on the integrated management of crossings would resume in Brussels on January 10 because the technical protocol was not clearly defined and would be valid only until a solution was reached that would respect the legal and legitimate interests of Serbs.

Vladimir Milentijevic, member of the Municipal Council in Zubin Potok from the ranks of the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS), said that he was satisfied with the conclusions of the Serbian government at first glance, as for the first time, the Kosovo Serbs got written guarantees for their demands, adding that the guarantees should be trusted for the time being.

But we do have reasons to fear as it is still unclear what the Serbian authorities intend to do when it comes to KiM, especially concerning the north of the province, said Milentijevic.

"Kosovo is not lost and we will continue fighting and helping the authorities in Belgrade in preserving Kosovo within Serbia, because only Serbia can be our country," Milentijevic said.

We will accept anything but to live in an independent Kosovo and recognize the institutions of the self-proclaimed Republic of Kosovo, said Milentijevic.

The conclusions of the Serbian government, which were handed out to the councilors of the four KiM municipalities before the beginning of the meeting in Leposavic, say that goods intended for the northern part of Kosovo would not be cleared and no other relevant duties would have to be paid at the Jarinje and Brnjak gates.

It also says that use of personal documents, registration plates, traffic licenses and other documents issued by the Republic of Serbia will be allowed.

Under the conclusions, the Serbian government is due to implement the agreement on the integrated management of administrative crossings, but if there is any violation of the agreement, it has the right to suspend the implementation.

The conclusions specify that the Jarinje and Merdare crossings will be opened on December 10, while the gates at Brnjak and Konculj will be opened on December 31.
