Wilhelm: Kosovo's seat at UN not today's topic

German Ambassador to Serbia Heinz Wilhelm has said that the question as to whether Kosovo would be granted a seat at the United Nations is not a topic for today, but rather a possible outcome of the political dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina.

That would be a possible outcome of the political dialogue that would be held in the future, the German ambassador said, adding that Germany's wish is that Serbia should not block a possibility of Kosovo's UN seat.

Wilhelm told reporters in Kragujevac that Serbian Prime Minister Ivica Dacic raised that topic, and pointed to his words that at the end of the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue, Kosovo's UN seat might be a possibility.

Asked whether the autonomy of the Serb community envisaged in the platform on Kosovo-Metohija (KiM) is acceptable for Germany, Wilhelm said that Germany backs the Ahtisaari Plan which stipulates a broad autonomy for the Serb communities, i.e. Serb municipalities in Kosovo-Metohija.

However, the Ahtisaari Plan does not envisage a special autonomy within Kosovo, but rather autonomy for specific municipalities, the German ambassador said.

According to Wilhelm, the proposal put forward in the platform and resolution on KiM goes beyond the Ahtisaari Plan in terms of autonomy.

The Martti Ahtisaari Plan of 2007, which is based on gradual independence of the southern Serbian province, has never been accepted by the UN Security Council, or Serbia.

During his visit to Kragujevac, the German ambassador met with Kragujevac Mayor Veroljub Stevanovic and toured the Sumarice memorial park, where he laid a wreath and paid respects to the victims of World War II. Wilhelm also visited the German company Meggle, and the factory of the Fiat Automobiles of Serbia, where he purchased a car that he and his spouse will drive.
