Drecun: Institutions in Kosovo will stay

Chairman of the Serbian parliament's Committee for Kosovo Milovan Drecun said Wednesday that Serbian institutions in Kosovo will not be closed, at least until a comprehensive solution regarding the entire Kosovo and the position of the Serb community is reached.

"If such an agreement turns to be as we proposed in the Platform, we could form a community of Serb autonomous municipalities," Drecun told reporters in the parliament building.

Drecun, who is also an MP for the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), said that the government's Platform offers a solution that could prove a long-lasting one - an essential autonomy for Kosovo within Serbia's borders.
"This means that the Serbs would have an autonomy of their own within that autonomy and then the operation of the existing institutions would become immaterial," Drecun explained.

"Until this happens, we will be strengthening these institutions, because it is the only way to protect the (Serb) people and help to survive," Drecun said.

When asked if Serbia will get a date for the start of EU accession negotiations, Drecun said that Serbia has done everything it could to normalize the relations with Pristina and has shown political will by taking the dialogue to a high political level, while Pristina is abusing the moment when Serbia expects the date for negotiations.

If Brussels takes into account that which Serbia has done so far, the country will get the date, but if it measures Serbia's progress based on unrealistic demands from Pristina, then Serbia will probably stay far from that date.
Drecun expressed the hope that Brussels will base their evaluation of Serbia's progress on what the country has actually done to resolve the Kosovo issue.
