Petkovic: Kosovo cannot be used as bargaining chip

Spokesman of the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) Petar Petkovic underscored on Monday that the government cannot use the territory of Kosovo as a bargaining chip for the sake of obtaining the date of EU accession talks, adding that the decision to shut down the institutions in the province for the sake of the date of EU talks would be a shameful one.

“We have to warn the government that they cannot use a part of Serbia's territory as a bargaining chip and destroy Serbia's statehood and institutions in Kosovo for the sake of the date of accession talks which may even turn out as insignificant for Serbia,” Petkovic stated at a news conference in the party's headquarters. According to him, Serbia is asked to destroy all traces of its statehood in Kosovo and in return it would get the date of accession talks, which would be an unique case that a country is asked to cancel its own authority and identity in a part of its territory so as to obtain the date of EU talks. “Not a single political party which took part in the previous elections addressed the issue of annihilation of Serbia and its institutions in Kosovo,” Petkovic said. Petkovic underscored that institutions styled as 'parallel institutions' are actually the institutions of the Republic of Serbia in Kosovo-Metohija, adding that their shutdown would imply annihilation of Serbia's institution in its southern province.
