Russia will agree only to a compromise on Kosovo

Russia will not agree with a UN Security Council decision on Kosovo if that decision is not based on compromise, Russia’s special envoy for the Balkans Alexander Botsan-Kharchenko said in Moscow on Thursday.

"How can you prevent Moscow? It is a permanent member of the UN Security Council and has the right to veto. We have said, in principle, that we will not agree to a decision not based on compromise," he said.

This was Botsan-Kharchenko's reply to a statement by British Minister for Europe Jim Murphy, who called on Moscow not to veto Kosovo's independence.

The Russian diplomat said he found Murphy's statement "strange."

Kharchenko recalled that the UN Security Council will at the January 16 meeting review the latest UNMIK report on Kosovo, and a draft resolution will not be discussed at the session.
