Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo said during a visit to Romania that Spain will not recognize Kosovo. At a joint news conference with his Romanian counterpart Titus Corlatean, Garcia-Margallo said Spain will not accept Kosovo's unilaterally declared independence so as long as Serbia does not accept it.
Spain and Romania are two of the five EU member countries which have not recognized Kosovo.
The other three are Greece, Cyprus and Slovakia.
Minister Corlatean said Thursday that Romania will re-examine its position on not recognizing Kosovo's unilaterally declared independence with a debate in the national parliament, in light of the agreement reached by Belgrade and Pristina.
We have an obligation to inform the Romanian parliament about the Belgrade-Pristina agreement, above all about the consequences and opinions of our European partners, including those directly involved in the negotiating process, said Corlatean, Romanian national news agency Agerpres has reported.
We have approached these political realities very carefully and thoroughly. The future will show us the direction very clearly, but we have welcomed the agreement. It is a big step forward and it is good for the Balkan region, for the peace, stability and European future of the region, said the Romanian minister.
Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta said earlier that Romania must follow the European family regarding the European Parliament's demand for the recognition of Kosovo's independence, the agency recalled
