DSS: We did not organise disorders, elections failed

The Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) denied the allegations on Monday that it took part in the organisation of disorders at the polling stations in northern Kosovo on Sunday, adding that there are no reasons to restage the elections in the province because they completely failed.

The opposition party said that they had no interest in interruption of the elections because Serbs boycotted the polls and the low turnout was not favourable for the Belgrade government which followed the instructions of western countries that wanted the elections to be carried out. Masked individuals demolished several polling stations in northern Kosovo on Sunday and a number of attempts were also reported in which the voters were discouraged from voting. DSS leader Slobodan Samardzic stated that First Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic reacted nervously when he called on the international community to allow 45 minutes for an intervention of Serbia's security forces in Kosovska Mitrovica because according to UN Security Council Resolution 1244, the Serbian police cannot enter Kosovo, and Kosovo Albanians and EULEX maintain the same stand. Asked to comment on the accusations voiced by candidate for Kosovska Mitrovica mayor Krstimir Pantic according to which DSS official Marko Jaksic organised the incidents, Samardzic said that this is denunciation of an innocent man, adding that the request for Jaksic to be arrested shows that the country is slowly sliding toward disorder and repression which would be backed by the EU. When asked whether he has any information that the Serbian Gendarmerie took part in the planting of the explosive device in northern Kosovska Mitrovica, Samardzic said that there are a number of indicators and a lot of data, and added that all allegations need to be looked into. The walk (of Deputy Police Director and former commander of the Gendarmerie Bratislav) Dikic around Mitrovica and the attempt to induce the observers to break the polling boxes is a strong indicator, as well as the fact that perpetrators were not captured, save for one who was released, Samardzic
