Serbs against distributing insurance leaflets at crossings

Local Serb officials in northern Kosovo demanded on Saturday that police officers stop giving out leaflets announcing the payment of cross-border vehicle insurance at the Jarinje and Brnjak crossings as of January 8.

If the distribution of leaflets does not stop immediately, a complete blockade of the Jarinje and Brnjak crossings and all roads leading to them will ensue, Ljubomir Maric, a member of the Management Team tasked with establishing a community of Serb municipalities, told The press. Mayors of the four Serb-majority municipalities in northern Kosovo delivered the decision regarding the blockade after consultations that were held with members of the Management Team on Saturday morning, he noted. Maric added that he will make this clear to police officers at the Jarinje and Brnjak crossings on Saturday and ask them to stop distributing the leaflets. Maric underscored that there is no agreement on the payment of that insurance with any representative of the Serb community in northern Kosovo or at any other level. On Friday, members of Kosovo police informed drivers coming from central Serbia about the payment of vehicle insurance by handing out to them leaflets in Serbian, Albanian and English. The leaflet reads that this is in the interest of drivers as it provides the cover against possible damage that could be caused in road accidents.
