Eulex continuing to disrespect Kosovo Serbs, officials say

Eulex is continuing the policy of disrespecting the request of legitimate Kosovo Serb representatives that the Kosovo police be recognised as the sole institution responsible for security and implementing the rule of law in northern Kosovo, officials of the four municipalities in the north of the province and the Kosovo police in Region North have concluded after an extraordinary meeting with Eulex officials.

The meeting was held on Thursday after Eulex conducted its latest operation in Zubin Potok earlier in the day, detaining suspects in certain cases."The continuation of such a policy and such operation of the Eulex mission put general security in the north in serious jeopardy, since the Serbs are treated as an unequal partner that is not prepared to cooperate in establishing the rule of law," officials of the local self-government authorities and the police said in a statement.Together with their people, the local officials have always advocated the rule of law, but the way Eulex is implementing it in northern Kosovo-Metohija, including excessive use of force without any responsibility taken for such actions, does not correspond to reality, but demonises a nation in a unique manner, the statement said.
The statement was signed by the mayors, municipal assembly presidents and heads of interim authorities of the Kosovska Mitrovica, Zvecan, Zubin Potok and Leposavic municipalities and members of the steering team for establishing the community of Serb municipalities.Nowhere in the world has a police force been marginalised and reduced to the role of regulating traffic as in the north of Kosovo-Metohija, while a complete population in a territory is treated as a suspect in various crimes, constantly criminalised and accused of avoiding implementation of the rule of law, the officials of the local authorities said."We insist that, once and for all, the large number of investigations be completed after being just launched one after another for years without ever ending, and that the suspects be questioned according to the law, in a manner that complies with regulations and general rules, by using the police as an institution", they said in the conclusions, adding that a politicisation of proceedings must be avoided.Such a practice by the Eulex, which completely excludes the Kosovo police, might lead members of the police in northern Kosovo-Metohija to leave service, they warned in the statement.
