"The Kosovo precedent is a terrifying precedent. It in essence is breaking open the entire system of international relations that have prevailed not just for decades but for centuries. And it without a doubt will bring on itself an entire chain of unforeseen consequences," Putin said.
He said the West's decision about the consequences of recognizing Kosovo's independence would "come back to knock them on the head."
"They're not thinking about the consequences of what they're doing," the Russian president said.
His statement echoed the swift reactions by separatist movements worldwide after Kosovo's unilateral secession.
The EU and the US have called Kosovo's secession a "unique case", but worldwide reactions have ridiculed such a stand.
