Rais said there were many things needed to be considered before taking a decision on the matter.

"Actually we are not in hurry to impose recognition or otherwise. But we are looking at it very closely," he told Bernama when asked about Kuala Lumpur's position on the matter.

Rais said the Foreign Ministry were studying several aspects such as the basics of the Kosovo government, the extension of the republic's diplomatic services, their trade with the rest of the world and their security and social setup.

"We have to consider all those in totality," he said.

The minister said once the report was completed, it would be put forward for assessment.

"And then we will report to the cabinet about the stand that we ought to take (on Kosovo). So the process will take some time," he said when met at the luncheon hosted by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi for his Thai counterpart Samak Sundaravej.

Meanwhile, three new countries have recognized Kosovo's independence this week - Burkina Fasso in Western Africa, as well as Nauru and the Marshall Islands in the Pacific.

A total of 39 out 192 UN member countries have recognized Kosovo's secession.
