De Kermabon: EULEX delayed for political and technical reasons

The chief of the EU mission to Kosovo Eulex, general Yves de Kermabon, said in Pristina that his mission would not start functioning on June 15 as planned.

"There are political,  but also technical obstacles", De Kermabon said.

He added, however, that Eulex is "exclusively a European, and not a UN mission".

De Kermabon is in Pristina for a several-day visit.

The Eulex mission, which the EU decided to send to Kosovo unilaterally and without a UN Security Council, has predictably encountered obstacles as it lacks legitimacy among the Kosovo Serbs and at the UN level.

The EU already has some 300 staff on the ground, mostly receiving training.
