The idea was proposed by the Italian Foreign Affairs minister Massimo D'Alema at a meeting in New York, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

"Such an idea is rejected by our side, since the independence of Kosovo is unacceptable for us because of the UN Charter, because of the UN Security Council resolution 1244, and because of the Serbian Constitution", Kostunica said.

He said such proposals were "an attempt to introduce the independence of Kosovo through the small door".

Kostunica also met with Russian Foreign minister Sergey Lavrov and US Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns.

Serbia's Prime minister said Belgrade and Moscow have identical points of view on the principles for the resolution of the Kosovo status, which are based on the respect of basic principles of the international law, the UN Charter and the Helsinki Final Act.

At the meeting with Burns, Kostunica said that the « US should stop talking about the independence of Kosovo as unavoidable" in order to have a proper negotiations process.

"Why would the Albanians have such a status, what is wrong with the Belgrade proposal in terms of the rights of Albanians when Kosovo would have 95 percent of competencies", Kostunica added.
