Germany: Appeal to Constitutional Court over Kosovo
Germany's Left Party presented on Wednesday an appeal to the Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe over what it described as the illegal decision of the Berlin government to extend the mandate of the German Army, the Bundeswehr, in Kosovo.

"The role of the Bundeswehr, within the (peacekeeping force) KFOR, should have been to concern itself with ensuring security in Kosovo during the phase of transition, until a decision is made about its future status...The task of the German Army, however, cannot be to concern itself about the independence of Kosovo," said Normal Paech, The Left Party whip in the Bundestag.
Paech believes that, since the unilateral decision on the independence of Kosovo has resulted in a new legal situation, the issue of the mandate of the Bundeswehr in the Serbian province should have been decided by the German parliament once again, and not by the German government.
