Konuzin: UNSCR 1244 basis for Kosovo solution

Russian Ambassador in Serbia Aleksandr Konuzin stated that UN Security Council Resolution 1244 will remain the basis for sustainable solution of the Kosovo issue.

The top Russian diplomat in Serbia also added that the UN mission in the province is due prolong its activities that will facilitate the process.

"We believe that the two interested parties should restore a dialogue which will be aimed at resolution of the Kosovo issue. We believe that the basis for a sustainable solution is still UN Security Council Resolution 1244. Moreover, the UN mission to Kosovo is due to prolong its activities aimed at facilitation of the process," Konuzin said in an interview for the Belgrade-based daily Politika.

He underscored that Russia's position regarding Kosovo is very clear and precise.

"We are against division of Serbia, and we support recognition of its sovereignty and territorial integrity in keeping with international law. We support the position that Serbia takes in respect of the province," Konuzin said.

Ambassador Konuzin said that as a result, Russia instantly supported the original resolution on the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice Serbia submitted to the UN General Assembly.

"Later, we were asked to support the other text which was composed together by Serbia and the EU. We backed it because it was acceptable for Belgrade. Russia faithfully fulfills its obligations toward partners," he said.
